A National Organization That Shares
April 17, 2016TTN was conceived when two women got together, realized they had something in common, and reached out to other women to expand the conversation. As they did this, they shared their experiences, concerns and their expectations for this next stage of their lives. That became the basis of "connect" and the key word here is SHARING. They were not selfish with their knowledge, they shared it with other women so they all could benefit.
More and more women soon learned about The Transition Network - some because of a personal connection to the founders, others through our book, Smart Women Don't Retire, or through one of our early partner organizations. This led to pioneers taking the message of transition support to other cities around the country. Was this part of the original vision? Maybe, maybe not. But the question, "what am I going to do with the next 30 years of my life," resonated so chapters were born. Like wildflowers, chapters bloomed, initiated by members with the passion and energy to create TTN communities in their own towns.
The consistent thread through all the years of creating new chapters was, and must continue to be, sharing. Our new leaders must learn from ones with experience. We're too smart to keep making the same mistakes over and over. Let's learn from the past so in the future we can make new mistakes and keep on learning.
When I raised my hand to take the position of Executive Director, I saw an opportunity to take this wonderful organization to the next level. This required the development of a strong foundation on which to grow, and clear guidelines to protect the brand while encouraging creativity. Growth occurs with the continued sharing of ideas and best practices.
In my experience, there's nothing gratifying about being successful alone. The best achievements are those shared with others. That's the vision for TTN as a national organization. An idea that works in San Francisco has the potential to work in Boston. The creativity of members in New York can have an impact in South Florida. This can be achieved if we believe that we are one organization, with one mission and an unselfish desire to be part of the whole.
We are very lucky to have an amazing Board of Directors. They bring far more to the table than just their opinions. Every month, they research, write, think, create, meet, discuss, decide and lead. And they do this for the benefit of every one of our members - north, south, east and west. Their mantra is to work on behalf of the entire organization. Their example exemplifies the culture we want to encourage in all of our leaders. We are part of a whole - what we learn, create and deliver can benefit others.
As they say, "a rising tide lifts all boats." Together we are far stronger than we can possibly be individually.
