Did you know that Philadelphia was where the United States vegetarian movement was launched in 1817 and where the modern vegan movement began in 1957?

Today Philly is home to a vibrant vegan food scene, from nationally-acclaimed fine dining to amazing vegan burgers and donuts. We’ll learn all about it with our visit to the newly opened (September 2021) American Vegan Center (AVC) followed by a walking tour when we will learn about Philadelphia’s unique vegetarian history while strolling through Old City. We’ll walk the same streets as  the Grimke Sisters, Sylvester Graham, Alfoncie and even Benjamin Franklin — all these and more helped move Philadelphia’s vegetarian and vegan history forward.

Philadelphia was the launchpoint of both the United States’ vegetarian movement (1817) and vegan movement (1957). Our tour spotlights Philadelphia’s veg pioneers - from 18th-century abolitionist Benjamin Lay to Basic 4's Alfoncie Austin, along with American Vegan Society founder Jay Dinshah (1960). AVC’s director, Vance Lehmkuhl, former vegan columnist for the Daily News and author of Eating Vegan in Philly, will lead what promises to be an entertaining and engaging journey.

The tour begins at the American Vegan Center, located on a charming corner of Old City, which offers books, snacks, gifts and information, pointing the way to vegan food options in the historic district and at key tourist spots.

We will have the option of having lunch nearby at Khyber Pass Pub, 56 S. 2nd Street. which offers a largely vegan-inspired menu.

Please note: The event is currently sold out.  If you would like to be added to the waiting list, kindly email your request, name, cellphone and email address to MicetroBru@msn.com
