Let’s start 2021 off right with a discussion of Netflix’s 2020 hit, The Queen’s Gambit. This coming-of-age period drama miniseries is based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name. Beginning in the mid-1950s and proceeding into the 1960s, the story follows the life of orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon on her rise to the top of the chess world while struggling with drug and alcohol dependency. This mini-series has received critical acclaim for Anya Taylor-Joy's performance as Beth Harmon, and for the cinematography and production values. It has also received a positive response from the chess community and is claimed to have increased public interest in the game.
The acting is marvelous, as are the elaborate costumes, with American and international sets adding to the realism of the Cold War period piece. Although chess is the focal point, we have an intense interest wondering if Beth will conquer her personal demons as she attempts to set herself as a world chess leader. The cost of genius is the true story here, and we think you will be captivated for the entire 7 part series.
The Queen’s Gambit is available on Netflix and actually has set records for the biggest scripted limited series (62 million households watched in the first 28 days!)
Watch the series on Netflix before this event, then join in the discussion with other members.
