Author, activist and entrepreneur, Judy Wicks will tell her story from life in an Eskimo Village in 1969, to starting her first business in 1970 (the Free People's Store which grew to become Urban Outfitters) to her founding White Dog Cafe in 1983 and the important lessons learned along the way. After retiring from business ten years ago, she has written her memoir and also started two non-profits to help build more sustainable and just local economies. Judy will discuss the importance of bringing feminine energy into balance with the masculine, how localization of our economy is an important way to address climate change, pandemics and economic inequality, and how all of us can participate in the localization movement to create greater happiness and leave a sustainable future for our grandchildren.
Judy Wicks is best known as founder of Philadelphia’s iconic White Dog Cafe in 1983, a pioneer in the local food movement. Her current focus is All Together Now PA which she founded in 2019 with a mission to unite urban and rural communities to build resilient, self-reliant regional economies to both mitigate and prepare for climate change while increasing equality and community wealth. Judy runs the Circle of Aunts & Uncles, a micro loan fund for local entrepreneurs without access to family & friends stage capital, which she founded in 2015. She is also founder of the Sustainable Business Network of Philadelphia and co-founder of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) in 2001. She is author of Good Morning, Beautiful Business, published in 2013, which won a national gold medal for business leadership and has been translated into Chinese and Korean.
