What can we expect at this year’s Academy Awards? Meta Mazaj will discuss this year’s Oscar nominated films, the science behind Oscar picks, and the relationship between Hollywood and world cinema, the subject of her new co-authored book, with Shekhar Deshpande, World Cinema: A Critical Introduction.
A senior lecturer in cinema and media studies at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts and Sciences, Mazaj’s teaching and research interests include film theory and history, film and nationalism, as well as world cinema.  She has published on critical theory, Balkan cinema, new European cinema, film and nationalism  She is the author of National and Cynicism in Post 1990s Balkan Cinema (VDM Verlag, 2008), which examines the relationship between film and nationalism in contemporary Balkan cinema, and co-author, with Timothy Corrigan and Patricia White, of Critical Visions in Film Theory: Classic and Contemporary Readings (Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2011). 
This talk is part of the Lightbulb Café lecture series which is presented by Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences.
