Sixty years ago the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities was founded. Concerned over intense post-World War II development and influence by heightened American patriotism, its early members sought to preserve Long Island's preindustrial past. At the center of its organization was Howard C Sherwood, a wealthy urban antiquarian who bequested to the Society his collection of early American antiques and his 18th Century retreat in Setauket: The Sherwood-Jaune Farm
60th anniversary celebration under a new name, Howard Sherwood: Preserving Long Island honors the legacy of Preservation Long Island's founder. The exhibition showcases highlights from his collection and through personal archive, explore the people, places and ideas that inspired his passion for early Americana and the creation of a society dedicating to preserving Long Island's past.
Light refreshments will be served.
