When a sales clerk calls you sweetie, how do you respond?  When you misplace your car keys, do you worry that you're losing more than your car keys?  Do you try to pass for younger?  Do you talk about senior moments?

According to author and activist Ashton Applewhite, these are all symptoms of the ageist culture we live in.

In addition to pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies who benefit from ageism, Applewhite believes many of us are unwitting contributors. By buying into an ageist culture, we shrink opportunities for purposeful lives and exaggerate fears that we're on the road to dementia and nursing homes.

At our May 21 meeting, we'll watch a brief TED Talk based on her landmark book "This Chair Rocks: A Manifestro Against Ageism", and then engage in some spirited discussions to figure out what, in our opinion, is ageist and what is not. And if it's ageist, what do we do about it?

The Impact Team will also bring members up to date on some exciting new opportunities to combat ageism in Columbus through Age-Friendly Columbus.

You are invited to gather for dinner at 4:30 pm at Polaris Grill before the program meeting. Polaris Grill is at 1835 Polaris Parkway.
