Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is the most critical indicator of whether a child will graduate from high school, according to the Campaign for Grade Level Reading. Three quarters of students who are poor readers in third grade will remain poor readers in high school.

Read by 4th is a citywide effort of over 90 organizations, public and private, convened by the Free Library of Philadelphia. The goal of this initiative is to significantly increase the number of students in Philadelphia who read on grade level at the end of 3rd grade.

Great news: the campaign to improve early literacy has already had an impact!  In 2017, the number of third grade students scoring proficient or advanced in reading increased by 5 percentage points, from 30 to 35 percent.

Join us to meet Jenny Bogoni, Executive Director of Read by 4th, and learn about the strategy and partnerships that have contributed to the number of third grade students scoring proficient or advanced in reading increasing by 5 percentage points.

Jenny will chair a panel of nonprofit leaders whose organizations are tackling literacy in our city.  Panelists will represent Philadelphia Reading Coaches, Mighty Writers, West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, and Historic Fairhill.

In addition to describing their work, they will share a challenge that members of the audience members will be inspired to embrace.

Panel members will address the way in which each of their organizations help children in Philadelphia learn to read by the end of 3rd grade.

Light refreshments will be served.  There will be an opportunity to meet the panelist after the meeting and learn more about volunteering in a variety of capacities.

Spouses, friends, sons and daughters are welcome!
