Just in time for Mother’s Day! Edible Flowers: Floral Teas & Sugars

Friday, May 12, 2017
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Rittenhouse Plaza Community Room, 1901 Walnut Street, Philadelphia
Contact: Jean Brubaker

Join the co-author of Edible Flowers: A Global History, Constance Kirker, in this hands-on workshop and create your own unique blends of floral teas. In individual custom tea bags, select ingredients as seductive and fragrant as red rose petals, lavender, and hibiscus and as unusual as borage, honeysuckle flowers, poppy flowers, and safflower. Learn of the potential health benefits of floral infusions which have been touted by herbalists, from Egypt to China, for hundreds of years.

In addition to learning about floral teas, create your own floral infused sugar. While not common today, in the 14th century, Italian Merchant Franceso Pegolotti listed fourteen different types of sugar readily available to the consumer, including sugar scented with roses or violets.

Sugar absorbs the flavor and fragrance of flowers and allows you to both extend the season and enjoy wonderful flowery summer flavors year-round. It also allows the essential flavor of flowers to be imparted into a whole host of dishes and beverages.
