TTN Chicago Chapter Lunch Bunch SIG Donates “Lunch Money” Plus to Chicago Food Pantry(Posted January 28, 2021)
Like other TTN SIGs, Chicago Chapter’s “Lunch Bunch” had our last in-person meeting in March 2020. Our 8-12 member group had been meeting once a month to explore various Chicagoland restaurants since 2013. Thanks to the capabilities of Zoom, we were able to continue to meet at the usual hour in our respective homes and enjoy our normal free-range discussions. Recent topics of discussion have revolved around life during the pandemic.
At our November meeting, one of our members, Joyce Davidson, talked about the increasing food insecurity she was seeing among residents of Evanston, IL while volunteering at the Hillside Pantry of The Greater Chicago Food Depository, especially over the many months of COVID-19 restrictions. This past year, residents have been hit particularly hard and pantries in our suburban locations have struggled to keep enough food and other essentials stocked. Joyce's concern was so compelling that we decided that we would help out and donate the cost of what we might have spent on lunch out, at least, to The Greater Chicago Food Depository, earmarked for the Hillside Pantry. We thought this would be particularly helpful during the holiday season. Each member sent a check to the organization and asked that it be earmarked for the Hillside Pantry where our fellow TTN member volunteers.
Some in the group have volunteered as tutors, counsellors, and teachers of English as a second language, but volunteer activities have been very limited this past year. Joyce has been volunteering at the pantry for a number of years.
For the December meeting, we decided to raise money that would have been spent dining out that month and support the food pantry where one of our Lunch Bunchers volunteers. We were very happy to have raised $320 for The Greater Chicago Food Pantry and surpassed our prior year’s donation!
