Montclair Peer Group Helps Halt Hunger
February 8, 2015Providing food to people down on their luck is a longstanding focus of the Montclair Peer Group. Almost immediately after the group formed seven years ago, its members began to stuff envelopes, bag donated pasta and even braid challah at the Community Food Bank in Hillside.
Last year, they began taking their work a step further, funding five-course dinners for hungry and homeless men and women in the Montclair area. Working through the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Montclair, which feeds up to 75 people every Wednesday night as part of Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless (MESH), several TTN members helped serve the meals as well.
“It’s a fantastic experience,” says one of those members, Barbara Levadi. “I got more from meeting the guests, and serving them with the kind of dignity and respect that MESH teaches, than I think they got from me.” Participants include, from left, Barbara Levadi, Sheila Eby, Paula Heller, Susan Schulman, Barbara Bressler and Pat DiMinno.
