A Unique Garden Visit for the NJWIT Group
July 6, 2014TTN member Dale Swisher invited the North Jersey chapter to tour her son’s home and unique grounds in Mahwah, ½ hour from NYC on Sunday, July 6th. The ten-acre property has fabulous Japanese gardens, koi ponds, beehives, waterfalls, water lilies, exotic and rare plants, berries, fruit trees and vegetables.
TTN members, Dale Swisher, Judy Glick, Lanie Gastman, Carla Loffredo, Joan Prince, Joan Knauer, Marilyn Shuffler and Cheryl Katzman, were struck by the beauty and elegance of the grounds. One member commented, “When you are in the gardens, you feel like you are a million miles away from the turmoil of Bergen County. “
Dale’s son Greg, and his wife, Janna Makaeva, designed the entire landscape and did most of the plantings and construction themselves, including two gazebos, bridges, and Adirondack style fences. Janna, who has a Masters in botany, is part of the Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization; belongs to a rare seed club where she exchanges seeds from all over the world; grows and dries all their spices and makes tinctures, healing salves and soaps from the plants and flowers in their garden. They also have several beehives that feast on Linden tree blossoms resulting in a delicious Linden honey which they make themselves.
There are several relaxation areas with hammocks and comfortable lounging furniture where you can read (not that they have time to do that), snooze, or listen to the music of the frog quartet which includes large bullfrogs and small tree frogs.
Greg and Janna own Cutting Edge Stencils which can be seen on the following Youtube video. Check it out…it is very educational and fun!
The weather was spectacular and the mountaintop views were wonderful. It was a lovely way for TTN members, Dale Swisher, Judy Glick, Lanie Gastman, Carla Loffredo, Joan Prince, Joan Knauer, Marilyn Shuffler and Cheryl Katzman, to spend a lovely Sunday together. Afterwards, the group had a leisurely, delicious lunch at The Grille in Mahwah. Thanks to Dale for another fun, interesting day for our members.
