A WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN THE HOUSE -- AND THE SENATE –But yet…

Here we are again in a particularly feisty and confusing election year scene!  What role can women (the sensible sex) play and how has that changed over the years?

Why are there so few women serving in public office in proportion to their numbers? Women make up 51% of the population and 56% of the voters. Yet at the state and federal levels, they represent just over 23% in state legislatures and less than 17% in the U.S. Congress.

If you are

-- puzzled by the few numbers of women in public office,
-- curious about what it’s like to run for elected office,
-- or outraged by the recent political attacks on women’s rights and responsibilities,

join us for our March 15 program and an opportunity to hear about what’s happening with women in politics today and how we can address it.

We will look at this gender gap with two women who have first-hand knowledge of it.

Debbie Walsh is director of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University, where she oversees its research, education and public service programs. She will discuss how CAWP is working to increase women’s participation in political life through outreach and education. She has organized over a dozen national conferences for women officials.

Helen Rosenthal is a candidate for the New York City Council in the upcoming 2013 election. She will talk about her personal experiences in politics, working to get a new school opened on the upper west side and as chair of community board 7 from 2007 to 2009, and how these experiences convinced her to run for the District 6 seat on the council. She worked for the NYC Office of Management and Budget, overseeing the budgets for the city’s public hospitals and health clinics for 7 years.
