Message from the executive director

It's September - Start Your Engines!

September 2012

Welcome to fall!  I’m always energized when I turn the calendar to September – the prospect of cooler weather and the fresh-start feel.  Much as I love summer’s slow pace, I’m ready to fire on all cylinders again.

Trust TTN to provide programs that channel your new-season energy…or help you re-engage. From Long Island to Santa Fe, the September schedule is loaded with events where you’ll meet someone you want to have lunch with – and find out what’s coming up this fall.  See the chapter event listings for details.

In addition to local programs, TTN-national is bringing the experts to you through our new webinar series.  All you need is a phone and a computer – you can connect from your couch.
  • Fall Fashion Trends to Make You Look Fabulous at 50 and Forward, led by JoJami Tyler and Deborah Boland aka the Glam Gals, in collaboration with The Three Tomatoes
  • Put Your “Passion to Serve” to Good Use Through Nonprofit Board Service, led by Atlanta member and nonprofit board expert Ellen McCarty
  • Medicare – What You Need to Know Now – two sessions, one for first-time enrollees and those who are enrolled already, led by member-experts NYC’s Rae-Carole Fischer and Chicago’s Emma Kalaidjian
  • Get the Most from Your TTN Membership – led by board Vice President Mary Klein and me.
If autumn’s cheer makes you think of travel, there are three spots left on our Paris Modern Art program, leaving October 27.  Join members from 7 chapters and 10 states and enjoy the City of Lights with art history professor Clark Poling and local guides from Road Scholar.  I’m delighted to announce our next travel adventure, a TTN-only Cuba: Artists and People adventure in May 2013 co-sponsored with Road Scholar.   We’ll take signups starting October 1, so get ready to book before this program sells out.

Even in the summer doldrums, TTN has been on the move.  The media continue to tell our transition stories, in an August Philadelphia Inquirer article and A Tale of Two Cities, by DC/Bay Area member Dianne McCutcheon on the Women’s Voices for Change website.  The Inquirer piece called TTN “a vital pathway to later-in-life friendships” and quotes member Janet Widra: “growing older – not old – can be as good as we want it to be.”   Dianne commented that TTN “sounds too good to be true, but it really happened – twice!”

And TTN’s “best of” qualities are helping us build new groups in Ft. Lauderdale and in north-central New Jersey.  Keep an eye on the website for fall events in both areas.

Membership is growing - to almost 2,000 - a 30% increase this year, thanks to the outstanding leadership of chapter leads and Steering Committees and our board…and TTN’s unique community of women exploring what’s next.

Now that you’re thinking about all that TTN has done for you- tell a friend!  Starting September 1, you get a free month’s membership when a friend joins and gives us your name.  The program runs through December 31 and there’s no limit to the number of members you can refer.  Everyone wins – you, your friend and TTN.
