ONGOING COVERAGE OF SMART WOMEN DON'T RETIRE - THEY BREAK FREE

Our June launch of Smart Women Don't Retire - They Break Free received good coverage in the media, and that coverage has continued through July. Here's a listing of blogs, articles and radio shows featuring The Transition Network and our book:

    Blogs and Websites (various) -

TTN members are lining up programs on Smart Women Don't Retire - They Break Free and TTN for the fall and winter with women's organizations, alumni groups, business networking groups, Ys and JCCs.

On Tuesday, August 13th at 2:00 pm (EST) Gail will be interviewed and respond to questions regarding Smart Women from the Boomers and 50 Plussers group on Eons.com. Moderated by Janet Wendy Spiegel, founder of Gen Plus (www.genplususa.com) and veteran blogger (www.genplus.blogspot.com), this group addresses the issues, challenges, recommendations and solutions for members who want and/or need to continue working. Looking for work? Have a career dilemma? Trouble getting back into the job market? Dealing with ageism? Trying to start a business? This group tackles all this and more. This promises to be a fun and lively exchange, so don't miss it.

TTN'S NEW PREFERRED TRAVEL PARTNER - CAREFREE TRAVEL - AND A MEMBER TESTIMONIAL

We told you about the new and exciting preferred partnership we’ve established with Carefree Travel in the July newsletter. In case you didn’t read about our new venture with their agency, Carefree is one of the country’s top retail travel companies, specializing in cruises, tours, and family vacations. They also have an e-commerce site called Wild Women Travel, specializing in women-only travel.

Check out the link on our Community Bulletin Board page (that will tell you more about the dedicated TTN Carefree site) for information on how to connect with a dedicated group of travel professionals assigned to work with TTN members. This seasoned group of women have experience with many varieties of travel, and can provide consulting and support for travelers looking to expand their horizons with new adventures.

We’d also like to share a testimonial that came in this week from co-founder Charlotte Frank, who was delighted with her Carefree Travel experience:

Wow. I want to report on an absolutely delightful experience with Carefree Travel. After spending 2 frustrating hours on Expedia, Travelocity and Air India trying unsuccessfully to book flights to India, I had an aha moment. I called TTN's travel partner, Carefree Travel. In an hour, I was booked on Air India, at the best price available, and all it took was the telephone call. Another TTN member, who is on this trip as well, also wasted 2 hours. We paid a small surcharge of about $30 each --- but well worth it to save the wear and tear on my psyche. In addition, the friendly voice on the other end of the line, Pat, is a TTN member who understands us!!!

THE NEW BI-WEEKLY DIGEST IS A HIT

Last week our new TTN Publication, the Bi-Weekly Digest, had its debut, and it was a successful one.

Nearly half of all members who received it in their mailboxes opened it up, and apparently liked what they saw: a news story on beauty at any age, an opportunity for entrepreneurs after 60 to be part of a magazine article, and special travel deals just for TTN members. The digest is our way of bringing you a little bite of the news, stories, resources and special offers you can expect to find at TheTransitionNetwork.Org.

If you missed out, be sure to look for it in your mailbox again next week. Or, just drop me a line - I'll be happy to personally send you a copy so that you don't miss out on a single issue!

EXPAND YOUR CIRCLE OF FRIENDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY- LEAD A TELEPHONE PEER GROUP

Thanks to TTN, you're meeting interesting women in your home city and enjoying those new friendships. We're now offering another way to meet women across the country: leading a monthly telephone peer group of six to eight women who live outside our chapter cities - from Maine to Santa Monica. These 90-minute calls offer a forum for women to share their current transitions, learn from each other and become part of a new community, just like an in-person peer group.

We currently offer four "TPGs" which are successfully connecting our members. Many more national members are anxious to get started in a new group, and with your help, we'll be able to form those groups. What's in it for you? A chance to develop new friendships, to hear the voices of women from around the country and to help other women experience the inspiring support of TTN's community.

Cathy Carrington of TTN's staff supports the TPG facilitators, setting up the conference call number and helping with logistics.

If you are interested, we would welcome you -- please let us know a day of the week and time that you prefer (can be afternoon or evening, keeping in mind that the members could be in different time zones) and we will work to invite members to join the group launch in August, September or onwards! Send us an email!

HELP CONNECT TTN NATIONWIDE - JOIN THE CHAPTERS COMMITTEE

The Chapters committee is open to new members. Join and be part of the dynamic and exciting interaction among TTN members around the country who are in the process of chapter-building. We are looking for people who will participate in chapter growth in the tri-state area as well as nationally. Contact Mona Kreaden.

TTN CARING COLLABORATIVE RECORDS FIRST SERVICE EXCHANGE

TTN is laying the groundwork for its new Caring Collaborative, an innovative model for aging in community through the exchange of services and information organized by and provided by peers in their community. Funded by a grant from the New York State Health Foundation, the Caring Collaborative pilot is now under way in New York City and the first official exchange took place in July. Here’s an overview of how it worked*:

When TTN member Nora Bleich scheduled dental surgery in early July, her dentist requested she have someone collect her afterward, as the procedure required a light anesthetic. While Nora was initially reluctant to ask for help, she recognized that in her adversity lied opportunity to test the new Caring Collaborative.

“I sent an e-mail request to Zip pilot group members indicating that I needed someone to collect me at the dentist’s office. I gave the date, exact time and estimated that I would need one hour of someone’s time,” explained Nora. Judy Capel was one member on the receiving end of Nora’s e-mail and she responded right away.

“When I first read the e-mail, I thought…. how brave of her to ASK for help,” said Judy. “So I answered ASAP because I couldn’t think of anything worse that asking for help and getting no response.”

The entire transaction went off without a hitch. Judy arrived at the designated time, escorted Nora home to her apartment, and filled a prescription at the local drug store. Although Nora invited Judy to stay for coffee, she declined since it wasn’t a social visit and she recognized that Nora really wanted some time alone.

As the first official Caring Collaborative exchange, both receive one credit hour in the Time Bank for their initiative and leadership!

The TTN Caring Collaborative is on track for its official launch in NYC in late September. Currently, the volunteer committees and zip pilot group members are testing the time bank software to address any problems with the system and processes. We’re also working with our partners to develop educational programs and member benefits.

Stay tuned for more details in the September newsletter!

* TTN Caring Collaborative promotes the service/information exchange as a confidential program with each exchange respected as an individual and private matter. Both Judy Capel and Nora Bleich are in fact members of its planning committee and voluntarily shared their story here to promote the Caring Collaborative.

NYC MEMBER CELEBRATES 65 WITH EXCITEMENT!

Happy Birthday to NYC Chapter’s Ellen Wright, who turned 65 in early July and celebrated by going Sky Diving with friend and fellow TTNer Linda Segal.

Ellen puts it best: “talk about taking risks, talk about thinking outside of the box, talk about letting gooooooooo!”

Congratulations to Ellen (and to Linda, what a great friend to jump out of a plane with Ellen!).

MEET THE MEMBERS: SHARING WHO WE ARE, HOW WE LIVE AND WHAT WE THINK

We are excited to launch this new section, in the form of a monthly topic posed to a sampling of our membership nationwide. We look forward to sharing your answers (anonymously) and providing insight into who we are, our concerns and delights.

August’s Topic: Tell us what you feel are the top 3 most pressing issues for women in your age group and how you are dealing with them.

Financial security
is very much on my mind right now. Although I've planned, saved, and invested, right now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Maintaining good health is essential; again I'm lucky to have both good health and good insurance. I have recently committed to regular exercise and yoga as well as a healthy diet. I'm also supporting Democratic victories for the presidency and Congress.

And the third challenge is staying involved with friends and on behalf of others. For me, volunteering is essential. I teach ESL in two different programs and am always on the lookout for other meaningful volunteer work. - TTN member, 66, New York City

Because it is one of my most recent transitions, being an effective grandmother and learning boundary issues with daughter-in-law, I seek the advice of other older and new grandmothers but would love a peer group focused on this for new grandmothers.

Having recently moved into the city full time, establishing and developing relationships, friends to "do" things with. Peer groups have been great for this, but one needs to make efforts to move beyond peer group meetings and take the initiative to make plans and further relationships.

Finding meaningful experiences beyond work. Since I still work part time and have a grandson I take care of a couple of days a week I have not done much about this issue. -TTN Member, 63, Brooklyn, New York

We need your  help - please share your views and opinions!  We welcome all members from our chapters and national members as well to take part -- if you would like to participate, please email cathy@thetransitionnetwork.org. We will then email you the monthly topic and request your response before the next newsletter is published. Your response will be listed anonymously as we strive to provide an overall glimpse into our community’s thoughts and lifestyles.

TECH TIPS & INFORMATION

MAKE A DESKTOP SHORTCUT FOR THE TTN WEBSITE; ORGANIZING YOUR FAVORITES IN FOLDERS

TTN's new Website is a great resource - to RSVP for events, check out the latest bulletin board posting, and read the latest article in the Resource section. This month, we'll cover the quick and easy steps to give yourself one-click access by adding the website to your desktop as a shortcut.

Add the Transition Network To Your Desktop
For PCs:
To create an icon that will be a shortcut to the TTN home page, go to the TTN home page (or your Chapter page) and then right click on your mouse. Most recent operating systems will have a menu item called "Create Shortcut." When you choose that option it will ask if you want to make The Transition Network a shortcut on your desktop. Choose Yes. When you close the windows you are using (or minimize them to see your desktop), you will see the icon for The Transition Network.

For Macs: On Macs, you can put our TTN website on your dock as an icon so you can click on it from your desktop and easily view. Dock icons on a Mac are activated easily with a single-click! To create, go to the TTN homepage in Safari, click on the small icon to the left of the URL in the address bar (in this case, the icon is a globe) and drag it to the right side of your dock’s dividing line (if viewing horizontally), and release to drop. The TTN icon will appear on the dock and can be single-clicked to load the website easily.

Organizing Your Favorites with Folders

For PCs:
To organize your favorite links in an orderly, categorized way, click on the icon Add to Favorites (See below), then choose Organize Favorites.

Set up Folders: (See full menu below)

1. Click on the New Folder button, then give the folder a name, and hit enter. Set up as many folders as you think you will need this way.

Move Files:

2. Highlight the Favorite from your list, click on Move, then click on the folder you wish to move the file to, and click Okay. And you're done. Repeat as often as necessary.

Keep your lists neat: Whenever you save a new favorite, be sure to find the folder you set up for similar items and you'll always have an orderly, categorized favorites list.

For Macs:
1. Go to Bookmarks in Safari, click on Show All Bookmarks, and create a folder with the + button in the lower-left-hand corner of the screen.

2. The folder will appear as an Untitled Folder and will be highlighted so you can rename it whatever you wish. You can create as many folders as you wish.

When you are viewing a website you wish to save under a bookmark folder, go to Bookmarks, then Add Bookmarks, and your Folders will be available to choose from on the lower pull-down menu on that window. Don’t forget to click on Add to record your bookmark!

If you have any trouble with any of this, go to your Help Menu and instructions should be available to help you complete the steps on your specific computer and browser.

Next month: Signing Up for Google Alerts (Have the topics you're interested in come right to your mailbox)
